Speaker profile:
Carl's career in coffee began in 1999 when he bought his first Muffin Break franchise. With no previous exposure to coffee Carl and business partner Scott Manderson used the franchises training to try and launch the business forward. Recognising coffee was such a crucial part of the business, and also an exciting area, Carl began searching for different ways to learn about coffee and discovered coffee competitions. Eleven years later Carl has enetered a few competitions and enjoyed success with 4 National Barista Championship Titles and 3rd, 4th, 6th and 8th at the WBC.

Carl has learnt a lot by being involved with a reasonably large, successful, but still nimble coffee brand in Muffin Break. Over his time with the business he has bought and sold 3 franchises.

With a desire to focus more on truly specialty coffees and gain better understanding and control of the roasting process, Carl founded Crafted Coffee Company in 2009. With a Cafe, Roastery and Retail operation Carl is able to utilize many of the skills and contacts made over the years. Carl has also started MTC New Zealand which is importing and wholesaling specialty coffees to New Zealands roasters at a time where quality is really becoming expected and appreciated within the market.
