La Maison Du Café of Yorkshire has won an extremely unusual award – it has taken the ‘outdoor caterer of the year’ prize in the Piper-Heidsieck Racecourse Awards.
The contest is sponsored by the champagne brand, and recognises various hospitality facilities in British courses.
The Harrogate-based coffee company was set up in 2005 by Tom Hawkins and supplies mobile units and kiosks to venues and events around the country, including Burghley and Badminton Horse trials and York and Cheltenham racecourses. He uses a variety of mobile cart units, including one of the ancient French vans that used to be described as that country’s major development of the horse and cart.
Meanwhile, in London, the Benugo chain has won the coffee shop section of the London Lifestyle awards, beating seven other shortlisted candidates. The organisers tell us: “The winners were based on the public vote – businesses promote their votes using their database and social media following, and the top three go to the committee, who get together to see if the winner deserves to win as some businesses may have a smaller database than others.”
